Beginner training plan
Your first lesson1. Build Comfort: Start by introducing yourself, asking a few questions, and making the player feel at ease. Keep the vibe positive and low-pressure. 2. Assess Skills: Watch how they handle basic movements—dribbling, passing, and shooting—just to see where they’re starting from. 3. Teach 1–2 Simple Skills: Focus on one or two basics, like dribbling and layups. Keep it fun with small challenges and lots of encouragement. 4. End with Encouragement: Give positive feedback, highlight progress, and suggest something easy to practice at home.
Lesson 11+Advanced Fundamentals & Game Readiness • Refine Core Skills: Continue improving shooting consistency, dribbling under pressure, passing accuracy, and layup finishing with both hands. • Position-Specific Work: Begin tailoring drills based on strengths (e.g., guard ball-handling or forward footwork). • Increased Speed & Intensity: Drills become more game-like, with less explanation and more repetition and reaction. ⸻ Basketball IQ & Strategy • Learn basic offensive sets (pick-and-roll, give-and-go, spacing). • Understand defensive rotations, help defense, and boxing out. • Practice reading the floor: when to pass, shoot, or drive. ⸻ Confidence in Live Play • Regular scrimmages with coaching on decisions and teamwork. • Improve communication, leadership, and composure under pressure. • Focus on mental toughness, hustle, and game readiness. ⸻ Overall Goal: To fully prepare the player to confidently compete in team practices, rec leagues, or school tryouts — with a strong foundation, solid fundamentals, and a growing basketball IQ.
Lesson 4-10Lessons 4–6: Skill Development & Consistency • Sharpen fundamentals: dribbling, layups, passing, shooting form. • Introduce: • Basic footwork (jab step, pivoting). • Finishing at the rim (strong/weak hand). • Simple plays like give-and-go or pick-and-roll (light version). • Start light conditioning and agility drills. • Continue building confidence and game awareness. ⸻ Lessons 7–10: Game IQ & Real Play • Begin structured drills that mimic game situations. • 1-on-1, 2-on-2, or guided scrimmages. • Reading the defense and making quick decisions. • Focus on spacing, teamwork, and basic court communication. • Introduce defensive techniques (on-ball defense, help defense). • Build endurance and decision-making under light pressure. • Encourage leadership, confidence, and positive attitude on the court. ⸻ Overall Goal (Lessons 4–10): Build a strong skill foundation, develop game understanding, and prepare the player to feel confident in live-play settings (like practices, rec games, or tryouts).
Lesson 2-3Second Lesson • Review basics from lesson one (dribbling, passing, shooting). • Add movement to dribbling and start layups with proper footwork. • Introduce basic defensive stance. • Focus on building confidence and consistency. ⸻ Third Lesson • Reinforce previous skills with more speed and control. • Introduce triple threat position, pivoting, and catch-and-shoot. • Begin light offensive and defensive play (like simple 1-on-1). • Start connecting skills to game situations.

Youth players
Working with kids • Keep instructions simple and easy to follow. • Make it fun with games, challenges, and positive feedback. • Focus on building confidence, not just perfect form. • Keep drills short and engaging to match attention spans. • Be encouraging and patient, creating a supportive learning environment.

Working with teenagers • Be clear and direct with instructions, but also encourage questions and input. • Challenge them with more complex drills and competitive games to keep them engaged. • Focus on skill refinement and developing basketball IQ (strategy, decision-making). • Encourage independence while providing guidance and constructive feedback. • Build rapport and respect by showing understanding of their goals and motivations.
