Beginner training plan
Your first lessonIn the first lesson, I focus on assessing the athletes, current skill level, comfort with the ball, coordination, and basic movement patterns. I keep the session positive, simple, and fun while introducing foundational elements, such as footwork, dribbling mechanics, and proper shooting form. My goal is to help the athlete, feel comfortable, build early confidence, and established the essential habits we will build on in future sessions. I also explained what our training progression will look like so they understand the path ahead.
Lesson 11+After lesson 10, beginners can expect a steady growth into intermediate level skills. We will refine technique, introduce more complex reads, work on offensive and defensive principles, and prepare them for real game situations. Training becomes a mix of fundamentals, game, IQ, film review (if needed), and confidence building challenges. At this stage, the focus is on taking the athlete from “knowing the skill“ to being able to apply instinctively in games. They’ll also continue developing mindset habit— effort, discipline, communication, and understanding their role on the court. My long-term goal is to develop a well-rounded player who understands the game, plays with confidence, and has the foundational skills to keep improving along after training ends.
Lesson 4-10Between lessons, four and 10, the athlete will progress into more advanced, fundamentals and movement skills will work on dribbling combinations, shooting consistency, finishing at different angles, defensive positioning, footwork patterns, and early basketball IQ concepts, like spacing, timing, and reading simple situations. Sessions become more dynamic, incorporating game like reps, conditioning through movement, and controlled changes that help athletes apply their skills under pressure. By the stage, athletes begin to see real improvement and coordination, confidence, and overall feel for the game.
Lesson 2-3In lessons, two and three, we reinforced the basics introduced in the first session while adding slightly more structure. We work on ball handling control, balance, proper stance, layup mechanics, and simple decision-making drills. These sessions focus heavily on muscle memory. Repetition with purpose. The athlete will begin to feel improvement quickly with this regimen. I also introduce light competition based drills to make learning engaging while teaching effort, confidence, and body control.

Youth players
Working with kidsWhen working with kids, I focus on creating a fun, positive, and energetic environment that keeps them engaged while learning the basics. I use simple instructions, visual demonstrations, and games based drills that built, coordination, confidence, and foundational habits without overwhelming them. The emphasis is on movement, repetition, and celebrating small wins. I also make sure to maintain a patient and encouraging tone, helping kids feel supported while gradually introducing structure, discipline, and teamwork in age-appropriate ways.

Working with teenagersWhen coaching teenagers, I take a more detailed and intentional approach. Teens are ready for deeper instruction, higher expectations, and more advanced challenges. I incorporate more explanation of the Y behind skills, film, study, or situational, breakdowns, inappropriate, and game like drills that improved decision-making in basketball IQ. They tell him becomes more collaborative and accountable— I pushed them to take ownership of their development whilst they offering guidance and support. With teenagers, the goal is to refine technique, build competitive habits, and help them translate skills into real game performance.
