Your first lessonEvery lesson starts with both the student and the teacher working together to create a plan and a goal on how they can become a better musician. Typically, I will talk to them about their challenges and what they want to achieve and then we will evaluate their playing and reading capabilities. It's extremely important that the student the teacher have the ability to communicate with each other and have fun because that's what Music is. My goal is to help the student achieve their goals.

What I can bringI am a DW artist so therefore I have a full DW kit in my studio along with my Sabian Cymbals. I am also a Sabian artist, Remo artist, vic firth artist, and Latin percussion artist. Everything is provided for each lesson

In August of 2021, my sophomore year at Orange County School of the Arts, I joined my school's performance ambassador program - Montage! - as a cellist. Mr. Jacobs was the music director of this program, and I worked under him for 3 years until I graduated. He was a wonderful director that taught his students about what the music industry in the real world had to offer, beyond just what is taught in school. I appreciated that Mr. Jacobs always treated us like professionals, holding us accountable and expecting the best from us. He respected each of us by listening to our opinions and then adjusting the music we played based on our feedback. He always made sure that above all, we were having fun and understood that fun is what music performance is all about. Beyond just the positive influence he had on me as a musician, Mr. Jacobs also nurtured my interpersonal skills through his kindness, humor, and ability to connect with others. As a new student in my sophomore year of high school, I was extremely shy and nervous about making new friends. Montage! rehearsals began right at the beginning of the year and I was not yet accustomed to my new school life. I remember how quiet the room was, as the rest of the quartet and I just sat there without speaking a word. As it continued on like this for weeks, Mr. Jacobs never stopped cracking jokes and trying to connect with us. His kindness to me was one of the biggest contributing factors that helped me come out of my shell and establish myself in a new environment. Another thing that struck me and really revealed his character was how he cared for his students more than anything else. For example, he prioritized safety by making sure every single student got to their parents or their car safely after each rehearsal or performance. Mr. Jacobs walked across campus to open the instrument locker room so we could all store our instruments there before and after rehearsals. Most of all, he would form a bond with each and every one of us by asking us questions about our musical and academic interests with intentionality. Out of all of the Montage! instructors, Mr. Jacobs was the favorite among students. At each year's orientation presentation, he spoke with motivating and inspiring words, evoking the most cheering and applause from all of us. To close, working with Mr. Jacobs over the years has truly been a privilege and something I will cherish for years to come. The ability to have such an impact on others, both on the professional and personal level, is truly a gift that Mr. Jacobs has, and I firmly believe he will be a positive influence wherever he goes.

Robert "Jake" Jacobs has been my son Kilan's private percussion and drumming instructor for the past two years. Kilan and his brother have had regular private instruction in music, sports, and academics for many years. We have worked with many different instructors and assessed their effectiveness and rapport with our sons. Jake's impact on Kilan's development stands out. Jake is a large reason that Kilan is a lead jazz drummer at the Orange County School of the Arts ("OCSA"). Kilan started school in the Manhattan Beach Unified School District ("MBUSD"), which has a very strong instrumental music program. When Kilan started the 6th grade in August 2022, MBUSD's middle school instrumental music director recommended Jake as a private instructor for advanced percussion students. Kilan started weekly lessons with Jake that September. Jake was teaching at OCSA's Popular Music Conservatory at that time. Two months into his lessons with Jake, Kilan decided to switch school districts and audition to be a drummer in OCSA's Jazz Conservatory. That was a challenge because Kilan had zero jazz experience and did not even have a drum set. But by preparing for his audition with Jake, Kilan was not only admitted to OCSA as a jazz drummer for the 2023 to 2024 school year, but was also selected as 1 of 2 drummers for OCSA's most advanced high school jazz band, the Ambassador Jazz Orchestra ("AJO"). AJO is comprised of mostly 11th and 12th graders, and the other drummer that year was a 12th grader. Kilan was selected as a 7th grader for AJO over existing OCSA jazz drummers in grades 8 through 12. Jake's instruction and guidance was why that placement happened for Kilan. Kilan has continued to meet with Jake weekly and looks forward to each session because of Jake's insightful teaching, thoughtful mentoring, and supportive communication style. His teaching continues to yield results. Kilan's jazz instructors at OCSA regularly comment that Kilan is growing tremendously as a musician, and Jake deserves much credit for that.

Mr. Jacobs is the best teacher I have ever had. He is someone who always gives the best industry and life advice. I had Mr. Jacobs for the first time my freshman year, and instantly, that class was my favorite class that year. There was the perfect amount of laid-back fun, but out of all of the classes I took that year, I learned the most in that class. I learned how to write lead sheets, which is something every musician needs to know, and I utilize that skill every single day. The year after that, I had a class called Small Ensemble with him. I have never in my four years at that school thrived more. I was learning and being taught life lessons; I learned how to work in a studio environment, and I learned how to read complex charts faster and on the spot. I learned how to deal with constructive criticism and how to give it to my peers without sounding too harsh. This class is incomparable to any of the classes I have had in what will be my 6th year at OCSA. It was an actual creative space to make mistakes, learn, mess up with total creative freedom. Mr. Jacobs led that class and built it from the ground up, and I speak for many of the students in that class that that class made their year. With all of the knowledge gained from Small Ensemble during my sophomore year, I started to spark an interest in Audio engineering. I approached Mr. Jacobs and asked if I could be an engineer for my junior year of Small Ensemble, and with open arms, he helped me become more comfortable as an engineer. His patience with the mistakes that every beginner makes helped nurture me into a better engineer. Mr. Jacobs has taught me countless lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life as a musician and as a person. He truly made me the musician I am today, and I would not be where I am without him.

Mr. Jacobs unwavering support, guidance, and dedication played a pivotal role in Rohan's development as both a musician and a student in the popular music conservatory. From the moment Rohan began his journey at OCSA as a freshman, Jake has been a constant source of encouragement. His positive reinforcement and belief in Rohan's potential greatly contributed to Rohan's growth, particularly in his drumming and performance skills. Over the two years they worked together, Jake was not only an exceptional teacher but also a mentor who inspired confidence and a love for music in Rohan. One of the things I appreciated most was Jake's habit of regularly complimenting Rohan on his improvement. This feedback was incredibly motivating for Rohan and helped him stay dedicated and passionate about his craft. It was clear that Jake took the time to notice Rohan's progress, and his encouragement meant the world to him. As a parent, I always looked forward to my interactions with Jake. Our conversations were always pleasant, and it was evident that he genuinely cared about Rohan's well-being and success. Jake's commitment to the popular music conservatory was apparent in everything he did, and I am deeply appreciative of the effort and heart he put into nurturing his students. Jake's dedication to his students and his passion for teaching are qualities that make him an outstanding educator and mentor. I am grateful for the positive influence he has had on Rohan's life and am confident that he will continue to inspire and support many more students in the future.

I am writing this letter to tell you about my personal relationship with Mr. Robert Jacobs. Throughout the five years I have been one of Mr. Jabobs students, he has shown me nothing but kindness, admiration, generosity, unconditional passion for music, and many more characteristics just to name a few. Through these years I have attended Orange County school of the arts, Mr Jacobs by far has stood out as not only the most well educated musician, but the kindest and most compassionate soul of any teacher. Whether it be through his inspirational words of wisdom he continuously gives to students to continue pushing towards their goals academics or music; or his unconditional passion for music as a language. I cannot express to you enough how good of a man Mr. Jacobs is. Through the countless rehearsals and lessons Mr. Jacobs has lead me though not a single one of them felt like a chore or punishment as he truly is a man built for teaching others a passion for music. He has the tools like no other to light a fire inside of youth musicians worldwide by exposing them to the community of kindness, compassion, and dedication that is the music industry. In addition to this, Mr. Jacobs real world experience as a working musician allows him to leverage anecdotal knowledge with textbook musical instruction. This raises his value far above any other teacher I have ever worked with. He will always hold a special place in my heart, and I am forever going to be in his debt due to the fact he continued to strengthen the fire in my heart for my passion and love of music.
