Beginner training plan
Your first lessonOur first lesson is a chance to meet each other, and discover your personal goals. What are some of your favorite songs? Do you have a favorite drummer? It's also a chance for me to assess your current skill level and develop a personalized lesson plan. Have a fear of sheet music? No worries! We'll squash that beef in a matter of minutes with my own personal lesson books written with that in mind. Drums are more approachable than you think, we may even have you playing your first song by the end of the lesson!
Lesson 2-3There are some fundamentals we need to cover if it's your first time playing drums and possibly even your first instrument. How to hold the sticks, how to feel/hear subdivisions, and basic sticking patterns. I also like to pick a song that matches the students ability to begin learning.
Lesson 4-10With the basics out of the way we can put an emphasis on groove, limb independence, and technique. I like to find real world examples (songs) of the particular skills we're working on. We can begin to put emphasis on song structure (intro, verse, chorus, bridge, etc.) through live "jamming" with a bass/guitar/piano to ensure we understand how to support a band!
Lesson 11+Once we've mastered some of the basic elements of keeping a groove now we can explore other elements of drumming that add up to a full range of skills. Here we are working on limb independence, syncopation, technique, and confidence builders, that will be applied to drum fills, solos and feeling complete freedom behind the kit!

Advanced training plan
Your first lessonOur first lesson is a chance to meet and get to know each other. This is where I can discover your unique goals, assess your current skill level, and develop an individualized lesson plan.
Lesson 2-3These lessons will be largely dependent on the students current skill level. Typically we take this time to strengthen what you already know, this creates a solid foundation for us to begin building on. Typical lessons in this timeframe may include: technique, limb independence, syncopation, groove, and drum fills.
Lesson 4-10Here we are continuing our learning of some of the basic elements of drumming while also working towards your specific goals. If you have a favorite genre or drummer we can start looking at the specific skills necessary for those techniques. I like to find real world examples (songs) to work towards, taking the student from playing "exercises" to actually drumming like their idols.
Lesson 11+Once we're feeling more confident behind the kit we can strengthen our creativity, and find our own voice. We can develop skills for feeling total freedom behind the kit, soloing, drums fills, and improvising with a real band.

Youth players
Working with kidsWhen working with kids I like to keep parents well informed on both our progress and the road map ahead. I often use less sheet music and move quicker towards playing with songs.

Working with teenagersWorking with teenagers is no different than working with adults in many ways. Teenagers do however come with busy schedules, which we will work around the best we can.

What you need to bringDrum sticks, pen & paper (notes app on phone will do), close toed shoes, positive attitude.

What I can bring2 Full drum kits for lessons, 2 practice pads, 2 music stands, white board, 2 self written music books, in-home lessons studio.

Xavier
Mikes wealth of knowledge of music and audio is really thorough. I've been trying to record myself at home for my band and have been struggling with getting good drum tones. Not only did he give me drum lessons that really helped me develop my independence and pocket, but we also covered how to make my drums sound good on my recordings.
Taylor
Mike takes great care in showing the road map ahead, breaking the vast world of drumming down into easy to understand steps. He is able to quickly assess exactly what I'm struggling with and quickly adapts the lesson to make sure I get over the exact hurdle I'm currently on.
Thomas
Mike is a good teacher. I liked how he broke it down so I could understand. We played songs starting at my first lessons. I even learned how to tune my drums.
Lucas
I was shown the basics for snare drum in highschool but was never really taught drum kit. I've been playing with bands for years but have recently decided to strengthen my understanding of the instrument and expand my horizons. Working with Mike has uncovered some of the skills I've been neglecting. He was quickly able to assess both the skills I already have, and the ones I'm lacking, helping fill in some of the knowledge gaps I was never taught in school.
Jamie
I took lessons before, I've never liked sheet music and always felt it was too difficult to read. Mike showed me how drum set sheet music is actually really easy to follow. Now during our lessons I hardly even think about it. Before signing up for lessons I thought we'd just be doing exercises forever, but within our second lesson we already started working on my favorite song "Man I Need" by Olivia Dean, I'm still only playing it at 65% speed, but I'm almost there!
