About your football coach

My name is Malakhi Statler, and I am a quarterback with two years of college football experience, currently playing at my local community college in Bakersfield, California. I played my high school football career at Frontier High School, where I ran an NFL-style offense and developed a strong foundation in quarterback knowledge such as mechanics, decision-making, and leadership. As a high school quarterback, I was a consistent and productive passer, throwing for over 6,000 career passing yards and 68 total passing touchdowns. I was named First Team All-League during both my junior and senior seasons, earned County Passing Leader honors, and was awarded MVP and Player of the Year in back-to-back seasons. I also received leadership awards my junior and senior years, which reflect my ability to lead, communicate, and elevate those around me. Junior Year 3,300 passing yards 35 passing touchdowns 220 rushing yards QBR 119.35 Senior Year 2,734 passing yards 33 passing touchdowns 222 rushing yards QBR 128.1 Standing at 6’1” and 185 pounds, I bring a strong physical presence, football IQ, and work ethic to everything I do. My goal as a quarterback coach is to help athletes improve their mechanics, confidence, pocket presence, decision-making, and overall understanding of the position. I focus on all the fundamentals, the accountability side of being a QB, and building the mindset needed to succeed at the next level. Whether you are a young quarterback just starting out or an athlete looking to sharpen your skills, I am committed to helping you grow both on and off the field. Beginner training plan
Your first lessonWhen I work with a beginner in the first lesson, my main focus is creating a comfortable and positive environment. I start by getting to know the athlete, their goals, and any experience they have with football. From there, I do a simple evaluation to see their throwing mechanics, footwork, stance, and overall coordination. I keep the first session very fundamental-based. We work on proper grip, stance, balance, and basic throwing mechanics before moving into simple drops and short throws. I explain everything in clear, easy-to-understand terms and demonstrate each movement so the athlete feels confident and supported. I also emphasize mindset and confidence early on. I let beginners know that mistakes are part of learning, and my goal is to help them improve step by step. By the end of the first lesson, I want the athlete to leave with a strong foundation, a clear understanding of what we worked on, and excitement to come back and keep learning.
Lesson 11+Throughout lessons 11 and on, I emphasize leadership, communication, and mental toughness. Quarterback at the end of the day is a leadership position, and these sessions help athletes learn how to command an offense, stay composed, and maintain consistency. By the end of this phase, the athlete should look comfortable, confident, and prepared to perform in real game situations.
Lesson 4-10From lessons four through ten, the focus shifts toward advanced skill development, confidence under pressure, and game-like execution. We continue reinforcing proper mechanics and footwork while increasing the tempo and difficulty of each session. As the athlete progresses, drills become more situational and position-specific. During this phase, we begin bringing wide receivers to each session so the quarterback can develop proper timing, rhythm, and chemistry on routes and concepts. Working consistently with receivers allows us to focus on route depth, ball placement, anticipation, and overall offensive timing, which is critical for in-game success. We work on full drop-back concepts, timing-based routes, pocket presence, throwing on the move, and accuracy at all levels of the field. I also introduce more advanced football IQ topics such as basic coverages, progressions, pre-snap reads, and understanding defensive leverage. Each lesson is adjusted to the athlete’s age, experience level, and goals. This is where I would probably start combining the QBs and WRs closest to age in groups, so we can waste no time in getting our agenda for that session started and finished.
Lesson 2-3In lessons two and three, I focus on building consistency and confidence off the fundamentals introduced in the first session. We review mechanics, footwork, and throwing form, then begin adding more movement and structure so the athlete can apply those fundamentals in real situations. We work on basic drops, weight transfer, timing, and accuracy on short to intermediate throws. I introduce simple pocket movement, balance under control, and proper throwing on the move. Each drill is broken down step by step to make sure the athlete understands not just how to do it, but why it matters. I also begin teaching basic football IQ, including simple route concepts, pre-throw reads, and learning how to stay calm and focused while throwing. Throughout these sessions, I emphasize accountability, effort, and confidence. My goal is for the athlete to leave lessons two and three feeling more comfortable at quarterback, more confident in their mechanics, and excited about their progress. All of this really varies on the age and level of my athletes, so going into depth on some things may be extra necessary or even not necessary at all.

Youth players
Working with kidsWhen working with kids, I adapt my lessons to match their age, experience, and confidence level. I understand that choosing to play quarterback is a big commitment, especially at a young age, and I truly admire kids who are willing to chase that dream. My goal is to support them, not overwhelm them. I keep lessons simple, positive, and fun while still teaching the fundamentals of the position. I break everything down step by step, use clear language, and demonstrate each movement so kids can learn visually and physically. I focus on proper mechanics, confidence, and effort rather than perfection. I also put a big emphasis on encouragement and mindset. Kids learn best when they feel supported and confident, so I make sure they know mistakes are part of the process. As they grow, I slowly increase structure and responsibility so they can build discipline and accountability over time. Overall, my approach with kids is about building confidence, love for the game, and a strong foundation that they can carry with them as they continue to develop as quarterbacks and as people.

Working with teenagersWhen working with teens, I approach my lessons with both structure and mentorship. At that age, athletes are more serious about improving, and many of them are choosing quarterback because they truly want to get better. I relate to that personally because I had trainers I looked up to when I was a teen, and that experience shaped the way I coach today. I adapt my lessons to challenge teens while still meeting them where they are. We focus on detailed mechanics, footwork, timing, and football IQ, but I also make sure they understand why we are doing each drill. I hold them to a higher standard of effort, accountability, and consistency, just like the expectations they will face at the high school and college level. Mentorship is a big part of my approach with teens. I work on confidence, leadership, and mindset, and I help them learn how to handle pressure, mistakes, and responsibility at the quarterback position. I want them to feel comfortable asking questions and confident in their growth. My goal with teen athletes is not only to help them become better quarterbacks, but to be someone they can look up to as they chase their goals and prepare for the next level.
