About your guitar coach

Greetings! I'm Andrew, a guitarist and educator originally from New Orleans, LA. I began playing professionally in high school performing around New Orleans at many venues and festivals including Tipitina's, House of Blues, Snug Harbor, and the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival. After graduating from NOCCA in 2008, I studied Jazz Performance and Film Scoring at Berklee College of Music on a scholarship, graduating in 2012. Since then, I’ve performed internationally at major festivals and built a professional career in New Orleans, Boston, and New York City. Performances include Blue Note NYC, Billboard Tokyo, Blue Note Nagoya, Jazz Standard NYC, and festivals including Marciac, Panama, Monterey, Puerto Rico, Newport, and Park City Jazz Festivals to name a few. Over the years I’ve studied with world-class musicians such as guitarists Hank Mackie, Davy Mooney, Brian Seeger, Mick Goodrick, as well as other instrumentalists such as pianists Danilo Pérez and Michael Pellera, saxophonists Joe Lovano, David Liebman, drummer Terri Lyne Carrington and more. I draw influence from artists ranging from Jimi Hendrix and Stevie Ray Vaughan to Pat Metheny, John Scofield, Charlie Hunter, Toninho Horta, and countless others. As an instructor, I began teaching other kids in my hometown and high school when I was 15 and I never stopped. I work with guitarists at every level—from beginners learning fundamentals to advanced players refining their artistry. My specialties include jazz, blues, rock, funk, R&B, folk, country, and Latin styles, as well as improvisation, chord melody, 7-string jazz guitar, music theory, and recording. My approach balances technical discipline with musical creativity, helping students develop not just skills, but a deeper understanding of the guitar and music as a whole. Whether you're a beginner picking up the guitar for the first time, an intermediate player looking to understand what's going on under the hood with music, or an advanced player looking to refine your skills, gain a new perspective, or prepare for auditions for schools such as Berklee, New England Conservatory, or Juilliard, I look forward to hearing from you!

I've been wanting to pick up the guitar again for a while, and while I've had a few instructors in the past, I've never really quite stuck with the hobby. I was really impressed with Andrew's attention to detail and how patient he was. I could tell right off the bat that he's a natural teacher because we went over the basics until I was comfortable, such as the parts of the instrument, how to hold and use a pick, and tuning. He was very clear, articulate, and super easy to talk to. I would highly recommend Andrew if you're starting out, need a refresher, or just want top-quality instruction.

When I first went to a music store to take guitar lessons, I was nervous being a novice. The person at the front desk, who arranged these sessions, told me she was going to assign me to the best teacher they had. Boy, was she right! He is extremely patient, kind, generous in his knowledge and just a wonderful teacher. In only two months he taught me at least 4 complete songs and helped guide me through a lesson book. I loved my sessions with Andrew and looked forward to every week when I knew I would learn something exciting and new.

Beginner training plan
Your first lessonI assess the student’s skill level and playing experience, and learn what styles they are interested in and their general goals. “If I could play ______, that would be awesome!” If the student is an absolute beginner, I’ll show them how to hold the guitar, fret a note, tune the guitar, etc. I give the student one or two technical exercises, go over a couple fundamentals, and jump right in working on a song of the student’s choice (from a selection they have provided). Or I can suggest a song to start with. Beginner students only need to practice 15min per day—that’s all!
Lesson 11+After 11 lessons students are typically drawn to a particular path or style like guitar soloing, finger picking, or other endeavors and we continue building on the basics of technical skill and musical understanding tailored to the students interests and goals.
Lesson 4-10In 4 to 10 lessons big improvements can be made. Just like in the gym, guitar students who practice just 15min per day can experience “newbie gains” just like you can in the gym. They will be able to play several songs and will have become familiar wi the the most important fundamentals of guitar: tuning the guitar, picking, strumming, chords, scales, song performance, how to get a good sound
Lesson 2-3Second and third lessons build on the previous technical fundamentals and add on to them, and with the students’ daily practice (15min per day) they will notice improvement and begin to play some music! By the second and third lesson, many students can already play an entire song!

Advanced training plan
Your first lessonFirst I find out what the player’s goals are and assess their technical ability. I then create a personalized approach for the student paired with my core curriculum of technique, musical literacy, and music theory. My core curriculum comprises about 1/3 of the lesson and 2/3’s are spent working on specialized projects, like learning advanced pieces, learning to improvise over complex harmony, increasing technical proficiency and speed. The core curriculum will be related to the piece of music the students chooses to work on.
Lesson 11+Students will have gained a great deal of confidence in their playing and understanding and will be able to start setting their sights higher for their goals with guitar.
Lesson 4-10Students begin to put the puzzle pieces together gaining a greater understanding of the guitar and music in general while greatly improving technically. There will be many “Aha!” moments in this stage.
Lesson 2-3Students memorize and learn the core curriculum and begin working on specific technical exercises in conjunction with the music they’re learning.
