About your guitar coach

I started taking lessons at 12 years old, when ‘80s guitar-based rock was peaking. I have since taken that passion for guitar and have become a dedicated teacher. My approach blends the technical know-how and the “feel” or, emotion when playing. I provide an encouraging atmosphere to unlock your musical potential, no matter your starting point. Let's embark on a rewarding journey of musical growth together! (All lessons in the convenience of your home. An adult must be present during entirety of lesson.)

Dan has been teaching private acoustic guitar lessons to my two sons (10 and 15 years old) for about two years now. He is an excellent teacher, as well as patient and kind. He's never been late, rarely canceled a lesson. I have seen the enormous progress that these boys have made with a good variety of songs including classics from the Beatles and other trendy bands the kids get to choose. And most importantly, their increasing motivation compared to when they just started. They practice on their own at least two times a week, whenever they have some free time (without me asking them at all), and also always look forward to Friday afternoon when Dan comes. Thank you Dan for your commitment and efforts, they are highly appreciated! -Natalia
Peri
I am writing to share our incredible experience with guitar lessons from Dan Albanez. Over the past ten months, Dan has been providing guitar lessons to my daughter, Peri, who had no previous musical experience. From the very beginning, Dan created a safe and nurturing environment that allowed Peri to fall in love with the guitar. Dan’s patience and flexibility are remarkable. He possesses an incredible ability to be both supportive and constructive, helping Peri understand the material without feeling overwhelmed. Peri is so inspired by her lessons that she practices daily—an impressive feat for a young learner! Dan tailored music sheets that broke down simple chords, making her favorite songs accessible and enjoyable to play. Our household is not particularly musical, so it has been astonishing to see Peri develop a passion for music. Dan has guided her towards achieving small wins and accomplishments along the way, which is keeping her engaged in the learning process. Additionally, Dan is extremely reliable and has accommodated our flexible schedule with ease. His professionalism and commitment come through in every lesson. In summary, I cannot recommend Dan Albanez highly enough. He has made a significant positive impact on Peri's musical journey, and I am confident that he will be an asset to any student fortunate enough to have him as a teacher. -Tanya

Beginner training plan
Your first lessonFor the first lesson you will learn each string by its musical note: E - A - D - G - B - e. You will learn how to tune the guitar using a tuner and learn how to tune by ear. Learning guitar is more than left and right hand technique; we are also training our ears. You will learn how to hold the pick. After all of that, you will learn the E chord.
Lesson 11+Continue learning different chords and songs. Each song presents a new challenge, particularly when it comes to the strumming pattern. Again, we are going to use our ears to figure out what the guitar player in that song is doing. I will provide the music to the song but you really learn best just by listening and getting a feel for what the guitars are doing.
Lesson 4-10We will continue practicing basic strumming, and I will introduce more open chords. I will teach you just a bit of theory from time to time throughout all of our lessons as it relates to the fretboard. I believe in knowing the very basics of theory as it relates to guitar. Trust me, it will help you! Depending on how quickly you master chords we can apply that to learning your first song.
Lesson 2-3We will tune our guitars, again, training our ears to recognize notes. We will review holding the pick properly and begin strumming the E chord with very basic up and down strumming.

Advanced training plan
Your first lessonWe will talk about what you know already, the kinds of music you like to play. We can jam a tune together to see where you are in your learning experience.
Lesson 11+More songs and discussion about what the guitar player is contributing to the song. How is he approaching his rhythm and lead playing? What are the other instruments in the song? What is their approach to keeping the song moving forward? Is there a piece of the song that is really interesting or challenging - a chord, a lick, a melody? Let’s break it down and figure it out!
Lesson 4-10Even more songs! We will continue to “level up” your technique and address any questions and challenges you have.
Lesson 2-3Continuing from our first lesson, we can explore more chords and scales. We can play/discuss what we hear going on in the songs: the chords, the rhythm guitar, any melody lines and lead breaks.

Youth players
Working with kidsKids 9 and up. No exceptions.

Working with teenagersTeaching teens is a bit easier for me because they already have the hand and finger strength to make a basic chord. It is just a matter coordination. Getting to learn our first song might be a little quicker than a younger child. I’m patient because I have been there!

What you need to bringGuitar (with new strings preferably), tuner, capo.

What I can bringPicks, sheet music.
