About your guitar coach

Want to learn guitar from someone who’s been at it for 25 years and still loves every minute of it? I’ve been lucky enough to tour the world, play arenas, and write and perform music across a wide range of styles — from Van Halen to Taylor Swift. I also sing, write songs, and play bass, ukulele, piano, and both electric and acoustic guitar. One of my original songs even won “Best Rock Song” at the San Diego Music Awards — something I’m really proud of! But more than anything, I love helping others find their voice on the instrument. With 15 years of teaching experience, I make learning fun, approachable, and tailored to you. Whether you’re just starting out or ready to take things to the next level, I’ll help you gain confidence, develop your sound, and enjoy the process. Let’s make some music together — I’d love to help you get started! 🎸

Beginner training plan
Your first lessonWe’re gonna learn some of the first songs and chords I learned on guitar at my first lesson!
Lesson 11+We’re gonna be playing some of your favorite songs now and get going on scales, guitar bends, hammer-ons / pull-offs, and more tricks to improve your playing. Remember though: learning any musical instrument is a marathon, not a sprint. The only way to improve at guitar is with practice, and repetition is key. At this stage, you may feel like we are going over some stuff we’ve already been going over—BUT the key difference is that we are refining technique and polishing up your playing. Lots of people can swing a baseball bat, but can everyone hit a home run? My goal is to get you hitting “home runs” consistently, and I know how to do it because I’ve been a professional touring guitarist for over 25 years. Trust the process, be kind to yourself, and remember that everyone has to start somewhere!
Lesson 4-10I’m hoping we’ll be able to get through a few songs by now, and that you’ll now know some of the lingo we musicians use to understand basic musical concepts. Maybe we’ll even know how to tune a guitar and play the pentatonic scale!
Lesson 2-3Let’s get you goin on more chords and more riffs so we can learn the songs you want to play! We’re gonna learn a few practice exercises too to make it more comfortable for you to play guitar.

Advanced training plan
Your first lessonLet’s first assess where you are. Play your guitar for me and bring any questions you have! Let’s turn it up to 11.
Lesson 11+I’m gonna be honest with you: my goal is that at a certain point you WON’T need me. I want you to be a LEGIT guitarist who can hold your own. Yes we never stop learning, this is true, but I’m hoping that eventually you’ll get to a point where you’ll be playing with other legit players where you’ll all be learning from each other. We’ll get there with time and practice!
Lesson 4-10Let’s see where you’re at, what your strengths are, and what you might be struggling with! By now you know that it isn’t just practice that makes perfect, but “perfect practice” that makes perfect. I will guide you to “practice perfectly.”
Lesson 2-3We’re gonna address any specific areas of improvement you want to address.

Youth players
Working with kidsI would recommend waiting until your child is at least 7 years old before they begin learning guitar. I’ve taught guitar to children as young as 4 years old before, and I’ve learned that beginning guitar lessons up until a certain age can be more difficult because of the physical requirements and patience required to learn how to play guitar. Sometimes the guitar is too big for smaller kids (even if it is a junior size) and it can certainly feel frustrating to not be able to hear yourself produce notes even when you’re trying really hard. So on deciding whether or not your kid is ready to begin guitar lessons is going to come down to assessing whether or not you believe your kid is patient enough to work through these factors—maybe they are! There’s no one size fits all. Nonetheless, beginning music lessons at a young age is highly beneficial for developing musical intelligence and all the life skills that come with learning a musical instrument—perseverance, concentration, memory, confidence, creativity, and more!

Working with teenagersLearning guitar as a teenager is a great place to be—most likely at this age, you have decided that you WANT to learn to play guitar. We can work really well with that!

What you need to bringIf students have their own guitar, it would be preferable for them to bring their own guitar so they can practice using that during lessons.

What I can bringI will bring my own guitar for myself to play on. If students do not have their own guitar, I can supply an additional guitar for them to practice on during the lesson if necessary.
