About your guitar coach

Hi my name is Horacio Hernandez! I’m a guitarist and educator with a bachelor’s degree in Guitar Performance and Music Education from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. This educational background has not only provided me with formal teaching qualifications but also a deep appreciation for the transformative power of music in education. My training spans classical, jazz, rock, and more. I’ve worked with students of all levels—from complete beginners to advanced players preparing for auditions or performances. Whether you’re learning your first chords, exploring improvisation, or diving into theory and composition, I’ll create a custom lesson plan that keeps you inspired, challenged, and making real progress. My approach is tailored to each student’s goals, whether you’re a complete beginner, an aspiring songwriter, or preparing for a performance or audition. As a teacher, I focus on building strong technique, ear training, and musicality, while always connecting lessons to the student’s personal goals and interests. I aim to make every session clear, engaging, and motivating, with custom lesson plans that help you build skills step by step. I’m here to support you through your musical journey and make sure you enjoy the process along the way.

Beginner training plan
Your first lessonGetting to know you! I always try to start by letting you know what to expect from me and talk about how I can accommodate my lessons for you. We will talk basics of the guitar like holding it, string notes, and holding a pick. Mainly just sticking with open strings otherwise moving onto basic fretting.
Lesson 11+The student already has exercises and songs to work on alone. Learning notes may still be apart of the process during lessons but begin to focus more on guiding the student on guitar technique. Focusing on tone, rhythm, finger positions, and other basic guitar technical skills. We begin to refine the playing to move onto other music and increase the difficulty.
Lesson 4-10At this point chords are a good place to be implemented, reading chord charts and learning to play strumming patterns. This part of the lesson will focus on getting the student to play the song they choose while working on along with other exercises in the lesson if any. Alongside choosing a song they will also learn some basic theory that is relevant to playing guitar and reading guitar tab. Individual practice always helps but in this part of the lesson they may still be practicing it during lessons.
Lesson 2-3These lessons will spend more time on learning how to navigate the guitar, how to produce a good sound and where to find notes. Simple melodies or riffs would be the main focus. Learning these melodies would also include the introduction of guitar tab.

Youth players
Working with kidsWhen I teach younger students, I focus on making music fun, engaging, and approachable. I use games, songs, and interactive activities to help build foundational skills like rhythm, finger coordination, and ear training. My goal is to nurture curiosity and creativity so kids associate guitar with joy and self-expression. I also adjust my pace and approach to each child’s unique learning style and attention span, making sure they feel confident and supported every step of the way.

Working with teenagersWhen working with teens, I take a more collaborative approach. I encourage students to bring their musical tastes and goals into the lesson — whether it’s learning their favorite songs, writing original music, or building advanced technique. I help them develop critical skills like practicing effectively, improvising, and understanding music theory in a way that’s relevant and empowering. I also aim to build self-discipline and confidence through structured, personalized guidance that respects their growing independence and identity.

What you need to bringThe student would only have to worry about brining their instrument. Having a device can be a good option if the student likes to read music on the device otherwise I can provide music.

What I can bringI have some books I could use if it appeals to the student and have extra guitars if the student needs an instrument for the day. I can also provide music for the student to read along with the lessons if they wish to learn to read music.
