About your guitar coach

My journey with the guitar began at 8, launching into private lessons soon after. Auditioning for and attending the Orange County School of the Arts Guitar program from 7th to 12th grade expanded my musical horizons, training me in classical, flamenco, jazz, and studio engineering using Logic Pro X and Protools. Beyond school performances at renowned venues like Disneyland, House of Blues, and jazz festivals, I delved into the LA punk scene and various local gigs. With four years of teaching experience at Guitar Center, I've instructed students of all ages and levels, embracing diverse styles and adapting to group dynamics. Teaching extends beyond the norm for me; I've worked with children and adults with special needs, aiming to make music accessible and enjoyable for everyone. With a passion for playing and teaching, music has been a constant and significant part of my life, shaping my journey into a harmonious blend of artistic exploration and education.

I’ve been playing guitar on and off for years unable to break through. I met Marlin and he was able to help me understand what I needed to focus on in order to achieve my goals. He conveys concepts clearly, he’s patient, and there’s an intention behind everything he teaches you. You’re not wasting any time with Marlin. What I think I like best is that technique, style, and timing are really important components of everything he teaches but you learn all of this by playing songs, riffs, and solos which makes it fun. Also, his knowledge of music and his mastery of the guitar is second to none. I’m lucky to have found Marlin. He’s the real deal.  Michael, 53

I was scared when I had my first guitar lesson, but Marlin was really nice and easy to be with. He taught me songs right away so I was actually playing the guitar after my first lesson. My hands and fingers could barely press down on the strings and now I’m playing Guns N Roses solos, and Led Zeppelin riffs. I’ve been playing less than a year. I’m having a lot of fun thanks to Marlin Moe, 8

What i really appreciated about marlin was that he took the time to understand what I wanted to get out of guitar and catered the learning experiences to my own goals.

Thank you Marlin! My favorite songs were smoke on the water, Crazy Train, Out getting ribs, jingle bells and Dani California.” Sunao 6

Marlin was a great teacher. Patient, kind, and extremely knowledgeable, Marlin motivated me to really apply myself.

Beginner training plan
Your first lessonFirst I need to understand the goals of the student. However typically I give out coordination exercises as well as focus on songs the student likes and loves to listen to, this motivates the student to keep practicing and the results of that practice create more motivation which creates more growth. I teach rhythm exercises, scales, and alternate picking drills usually within the first year of lessons which allows the student to get an idea of what route they may want to do to ur pursuing with the instrument whether it’s finger style, rock and roll, or jazz.
Lesson 11+Here, a beginner can expect to see significant improvement in playing speed and how comfortable one is with the instrument. Knowing where the frets are, which strings you are hitting, and how to play precisely and cleanly should be a lot more solidified at this point.
Lesson 4-10At this point, if you’ve been practicing the exercises you should be able to get around an intermediate level song.
Lesson 2-3Here we going into metronome work in order to increase finger strength, precision and speed.

Youth players
Working with kidsWith children, it’s important to provide inspiration and work according to their learning styles. Some kids learn visually by observing, others learn through asking questions and curiosity. The overlap between different learning styles is a need for patience as well as discipline. Children tend to have short attention spans, but when properly motivated they can stay on task for 30 minutes easily. Rather than boring them with scales and music theory it’s important to show them songs they think are cool. This is the ultimate motivator.

Working with teenagersWith teenagers, it’s very important to treat them as adults and give them the tools and opportunity to showcase their own discipline and ability to improve upon themselves. Typically I will teach according to their own taste, whether it’s rock, pop, jazz, every teenager wants a mentor and someone who can give them the tools to get where they want to be in music. This is what I do, and I’ve learned to do it very well.

What you need to bringA guitar or an instrument of your own is preferred but I am happy to provide one as well!

What I can bringI can bring a guitar and an amp if needed. Can also bring my own tab paper and chord charts to hand out every lesson.
