Owen
Michael has been an amazing guitar teacher for our 15 year old son, Owen. He strikes the perfect balance of being encouraging, fun, and incredibly knowledgeable. Michael’s musical gifting quickly became so obvious, that we lovingly refer to him as Obi-Wan, the Jedi of instruments. Week after week, Michael has presented the complexities of guitar in a way that is manageable for Owen, and yet gives him plenty to practice throughout the week. Owen genuinely looks forward to every lesson and has made incredible progress—not just in skill, but in confidence and creativity. It has been the best money we’ve spent on his education this last year. Highly highly recommend!

Michael is hands down the best tutor I have ever worked with! He is patient, kind and cares about your success and growth. I worked with Michael for a few years going through Music Theory 1,2 and 3. He was careful to explain each concept thoroughly, breaking it down in a way that was tangible while providing tips and tools along the way. Whether you are looking to learn or progress on an instrument you’re passionate about or wanting to pass your Theory class, Michael will have your back and support you each step of the way!

I had and am having a great experience learning guitar! Michael is super patient and explained everything clearly. We focused on technique and rhythm and I felt like I made real progress. It was fun, challenging, and really motivating. I’m already looking forward to more!

Beginner training plan
Your first lessonWe’ll start off getting to know each other a little bit! In our first lesson we will focus on hand position, how to hold the instrument, our first 3-4 chords (G, C, D, Em), and basic strumming patterns. We’ll end the lesson playing your first song!
Lesson 11+This is really up to you! Some concepts we can focus on and continue to polish: • Bar chords, Major7th chords, Minor seventh chords, triads, jazz harmony • Advanced soloing, riffs, and leads! • Ear training, learning songs by ear. • Arrangement and playing with a band • Fingerpicking, finger style guitar. • Etc.
Lesson 4-10We’ll refine technique, learn how to read chord notation and tablature if desired We’ll polish and be able to perform our first couple of songs! More complex strumming patterns, playing with more dynamics, playing with a band. Beginner soloing and scales!
Lesson 2-3We’ll begin by reviewing our first chords and then move on to the Am and F chords and play in the key of C a bit. We’ll introduce some more strumming patterns and pick a song or two to focus on learning. The third lesson we’ll introduce Dm, E, and A, and from there we’ll be able to play pretty much any basic song! We’ll continue to practice strumming patterns.

Youth players
Working with kidsWith kids, I like to focus on developing rapport and having fun throughout our lessons. Parents are encouraged to stay during our lesson times, but if that’s not possible I give lessons at a local church in the main sanctuary with doors open and people present throughout the building for safety and accountability.

Working with teenagersWith teenagers, I like to learn what kind of music they like and help them focus on getting to a place where they can play the songs they love. Balancing discipline and fun in lessons and practice is a priority for our lessons! Overall, I adjust my lesson goals to the goals of the student, collaborating on where we go with lessons.

What you need to bringIf you have a guitar and/or iPad you prefer, bring it!

What I can bringI can provide a spare acoustic guitar, music stand, iPad for digital handouts and music, and/or printed handouts and music for use during lesson time.
