Beginner training plan
Your first lessonWe begin with learning the first notes on the keyboard, namely middle C to E and middle C to A. We practice playing A through E with all five consecutive fingers, each hand separately.
Lesson 11+We learn to play the C major scale with each hand separately. We try to name each note as we play it without looking at our hand if possible. Scale covers only one octave, from middle C to upper C.
Lesson 4-10We practice playing the song faster ( at a higher tempo) and maybe learn a new song with the same notes. We use a metronome to practice simple rhythms.
Lesson 2-3We learn to read these notes on paper and try to learn a song written with just these notes.
Youth players
Working with kidsI teach mostly by having kids learn new songs regularly. We can discuss what songs will be appropriate given the lesson being taught.
Working with teenagersI need to assess what skills a teenager has and then determine the best pieces to work on and what new pieces he or she may want to learn.
What you need to bringBring favorite music book. Be prepared to learn a new song.
