Beginner training plan
Your first lessonThis will mostly involve getting to know you and your writing style and skills, as well as establishing what goals you have for tutoring and what you hope to accomplish by the end!
Lesson 2-3Ideally, lessons will be weekly or biweekly and involve exercises of various types and purposes: vocabulary, spelling, reading aloud, reading comprehension, writing. We’ll typically go over the exercises together after they’re completed so students receive feedback immediately.
Lesson 4-10Just like lessons 2-3, with some possible brief homework assignments between lessons, depending.
Youth players
Working with kidsWhen teaching kids, I’ll focus primarily on sound-aloud reading, spelling, and vocabulary. It’ll involve a lot of encouragement and patience so the student feels safe to make mistakes and eager to learn new things.
Working with teenagersWhen teaching teens, I’ll focus on reading comprehension, more advanced spelling and vocabulary, and writing exercises. Teens will be encouraged to find reading materials that interest them and write about both the contents and techniques of their chosen materials.
What you need to bringIf meeting in person, students are encouraged to bring their own notebook and/or laptop as well as their preferred writing utensils. If meeting online, students are expected to be in a quiet space for the duration of the lesson and actively participating in the session.
What I can bringIf we’re meeting in person, I’ll bring any necessary printed worksheets as well as some extra writing utensils. If we’re meeting online, I’ll most likely be coordinating over Google Drive and with screen sharing.
