My name is David Fryer, and I am a singer-songwriter and working musician based in New York City. I recently took a lesson on vocal technique with Isaac Mann, and I can wholeheartedly recommend him as a teacher. I have been performing as a vocalist for 10 years and have some skill, yet I am largely self-taught. During the lesson I was able to experience the benefits of applying some theory and technique to my singing. In particular, I wanted to improve my ability to sing notes at the upper end of my range as a baritone without sounding strained and harsh. Through a number of exercises and concepts drawing from Isaac's extensive background as an opera and jazz singer, he was able to help me target the different parts of the body used in signing (stomach muscles, chest voice, head voice, and falsetto) and show how these things are interconnected. For example, I learned that practicing a melody with my falsetto can, in turn, aid me while singing the same melody with my chest voice. Isaac clearly lives and breathes music and has extensive theory and experience regarding the intricacies of the instrument of the human voice, yet his sense of humor and playfulness made for a highly enjoyable and stress-free lesson.

I am a chorale singer with Grace Chorale of Brooklyn. I have worked for over a year with Isaac Mann for vocal support. His exercises have helped to free up my voice. He has been of invaluable help when I have chorale pieces in French, Italian, and German. He has an excellent ear for spoken language, and he knows just how to make the pronunciation adjustments when singing. When I struggle with intervals, he gives me useful exercises and I am learning to sing these intervals in any key. I enjoyed my singing lesson with Isaac! He provided helpful vocal warmups at the start of the lesson. He then helped me identify my singing range. From there we did exercises for expanding my range as well as for practicing diaphragmatic breathing. Isaac helped show me how these exercises translate to singing with more power and clarity in performance. Isaac exudes curiosity and joy for singing. He definitely got me excited about singing and kept the lesson fun and positive. I’m looking forward to my next lesson!
