About your singing coach

Hi, My name is Mark Filatov! I am a classically-trained singer based in Brooklyn, NY, holding a Masters in Music for Voice from the Manhattan School of Music. When learning to sing, we always tend to work on our instrument almost all the time even through just regular speech, not to mention karaoke nights at home with family or at a party or simply jamming and singing along and having a good time with it, sometimes the inspiration comes from those experiences and then decide to give singing a shot! I've found my love for singing from just that, I was only 6, jamming to songs on the radio while on the road to the countryside, and then I fell in love with classical the moment when I first heard Pavarotti sing the Duke's aria from Verdi's Rigoletto when I was 8, my passions grew louder since then and have decided to pursue it. vocal training consists of various vocal exercises (warm ups and cooldowns) that help you navigate and discover what your voice can do, how it is done, and how to improve and maintain it, starting from how we stand, how we breath, and how we produce the sound. If you're starting out and didn't have a song in mind to sing, I recommend starting your journey in classical music with Schirmer's "The 24 Italian Songs and Arias" as it builds a steady foundation for classical singers, also Schirmer's Lieder Anthology, filled with beautiful songs you'll definitely enjoy singing, Same thing with the French Song Anthology by the same publisher, they're all essential books for classical singers of all voice types. I'm also definitely open to other styles as I also embarked on Musical theater for a time and I write pop music aside from my classical endeavors, with the goal of being as well rounded in vocal music of all types as I can, I played as Jean Valjean once in high school, that was my first ever performing musical theater as well as my first major role in a larger work such as a musical. As for coaching, we would utilize some vocal exercises and then work on the music, sometimes we will discuss on both the musical aspect of the music as well as the narrative/text, through this I say, singers are also actors, we portray ourselves through emotion to bring the text and music to life. With 12 years' experience being a choral nerd and a performing singer, along with being provided a lot of feedback through the years and the education I've had for my sic years at the Manhattan School of Music, I bring concert-level expertise to every lesson/coaching. I create a supportive environment where technique meets artistry, and we explore your unique sound together. Let's embark on your vocal journey!

Beginner training plan
Your first lessonWe will normally work with warmups for breathing, then some scales to get a better understanding of your voice, I may ask various questions to know your goals and ambitions. I will give suggestions of songs we could work with, usually from the Schirmer Lieder Anthology, French song Anthology, or 24 Italian songs and arias. If you never spoke those languages, do not fret, we can just start from singing everything on a vowel and I'll guide you on pronouncing the words, it's easier than it looks. We will always end lessons with a slow breathing exercise to get rid of the nerves.
Lesson 11+We will start the lesson addressing and catching up, then warmup, then sing, and I'll possibly do a studio performance where students will have a chance to perform and sing one or two of their songs, it's like a showcase of the progress we have made in our time together, further lessons will get easier as its just catch up, warmup, work on a song, and cool down.
Lesson 4-10We will just have a quick chat to make sure you're doing good and address the progress you've done, we will then warmup and work on the songs, it gets simpler as the lessons go on.
Lesson 2-3We will touch base on what we started, similar warmups, introduce certain aspects of technique such as stance, support, classical voice terms such as Sul Fiato and appogio, kinda like a fun facts video but explained in person and demonstrated. We will then keep working on the song you picked and start putting a relationship about the words in the songs, translate them, I'll likely teach the process to you if needed and if progress is made, I may likely assign another song to you, this way we will build a repertoire for you to choose from for you to perform.

Advanced training plan
Your first lessonWe start off our lessons with likely 10 min of just getting to know who you are and where you are in singing, what songs you have done, and then I'll ask you if you have your favorite warmups to start with, and then we will work with a song you intend to bring to the lesson, if not, we will work on a song you've previously worked on as a refresher.
Lesson 11+If you'd like, and if I have enough people in the studio, we can do a performance class which will just be a showcase of the work we did together, and if it's not a lot of people, we could use this as an opportunity to make some tapes for audition purposes and if you'd like, you may bring your own pianist or I'll provide one for it once planned.
Lesson 4-10The coachings follow through the same model as lessons 2-3, catch up, Warm up, sing it up, analyze and suggest, then plan forward.
Lesson 2-3We will take these lessons as coachings at this point. We will catch up, warm up, troubleshoot, sing through a song or two, add analysis of the song and then plan another song for the next coaching.

What you need to bringJust yourself and a smartphone or tablet for recording, as well as utilizing an app called "appconpanist", a tablet a plus so I can airdrop scores or notes if necessary, if you want, I would recommend downloading IMSLP to curate your scores and easy viewing, if you want it to go the premium route, get Forescore

What I can bringI usually work with an IPad so most of the scores and recording happen through there
