About your tennis coach

MILWAUKEE!!! Tennis has been my greatest passion ever since I made the Varsity Singles roster for the Nicolet High school tennis team as a freshman. I’ve been coaching for 5 years now and have luckily been able to share my technical skills as an instructor with a local country club near my college campus. I have experience coaching across age groups, from 9-year olds in red ball to 16-year olds fighting to make their high school Varsity teams, as well as the occasional parent looking to up their skills. I happily coach both boys and girls. Can also coach in Spanish. I am back in Milwaukee County for the summer, where I am a sports intern with CBS. I am doing this partially in order to make a living and partially to share my love for the sport with students. I am now a rising senior at Syracuse University and am not sure if I will continue coaching after graduation. I make sessions in hour package deals or by themselves, and each session starts at $40/hour. Come learn from a Syracuse club player! Thanks and happy hitting!

Leila and Dana Jenks
Review from Dana and Leila Jenks. David was Leila’s tennis instructor in the summer and fall of 2021. Although Leila was a beginner, having never played organized tennis in her life, David was able to help her become a more assured player from the start. He patiently worked with her on developing the basics, while his love of the game was making our daughter more excited about the classes. David was very internally motivated to see her succeed. Leila at the time was thinking about how once she turned 15 she might want to join the JV tennis team. Now a freshman, she never did, but he made it a fun sport for her with games at the end of practices. David was also very flexible and prompt whenever we needed to rearrange our schedule, and we appreciated that.
Jack Schultz
Written by Jack Schultz - David was a friendly coach and really made me work on my inside out forehand. At the time I was in middle school and he was on the high school Varsity team. Now I am a Varsity senior and although we only had a few 90-minute lessons, he gave me some good IQ tips as a Singles player getting older.
Kurran Singh Bhandal
Written by David’s practice opponent and fellow Syracuse Club Tennis player - I’d say that he’s very analytical on the court. He’s deliberate with the shots he hits and purposeful with the adjustments he makes based off of the opponents’ play. Through varying his service speed and placement, his forehand directionally, and the interspersed use of slice and spin on the backhand, everything is done for a reason. And importantly, in doubles, David can recognize for himself and me when these shifts need to be made. The adaptability he has is what propels you forward, but aspects like general tennis IQ, speed, and stamina allow him to lengthen points and force errors from his opponents. In saying this, these self-adjustments will cater well to adjusting other individuals behavior patterns on the court, coming from an individual who has coached for 9 years at 2 country clubs, 2 tennis academies, and as a private instructor. David is a quality player and I don’t doubt he would be a quality coach.
David Fernando
Written by David Fernando - I've known David for a couple years now since we joined Syracuse club tennis together and we've hit several times. He's been playing tennis for a long time and is very passionate about sports even outside of tennis. While he isn't the hardest hitter compared to peers around the same level, he makes up for it with his excellent mental game/tactics and athleticism. He moves effectively on the court and often is in the right positions to limit my finishing ability. With strengths like those and experience with the game, I have no doubt he knows his stuff, and would make a pretty good coach.
Luis McDougall
From Luis McDougall, the hitting partner I’ve played with more than anyone in my life - David is a skilled and experienced tennis player with a background in competitive play and leadership. A former high school team captain and multi-year state qualifier, he now plays for the Syracuse University club tennis team. Along with his counterpunching style and analytical approach to offensive gameplay, David excels at reading the game and efficiently understanding players’ strengths and weaknesses. I have personally coached alongside him previously and would recommend him as a mentor for players of all levels.

Beginner training plan
Your first lessonIn short, the first lesson is mostly hand-fed drills and just a temperature measure for how technically sound the student is. For new or inexperienced students, I always start with a short-court rally for me to gauge their experience level. Typically I then move to hand-fed forehand drills from the same side as the student and analyze their groundstroke accuracy and depth. Once I get a good feel for the student’s rhythm and timing, I teach them the mechanics of the serve motion - often avoiding the continental grip serve lesson for kids under the age of 10. I then review the technique of a backhand unit turn, review the four-pronged forehand technique and review student’s understanding of the lesson. For young children (under 12 years old), I incorporate an accuracy game using myself as a target in every lesson to engage them.
Lesson 4-10Technical adjustment as needed, but mostly these lessons will be more practice-oriented. If the student is successful in exhibiting movement and technique, we will work on aggression on the student’s preferred side (i.e. inside-out forehand drills, backhand down the line drills)
Lesson 2-3For Lesson 2 student can expect another brief review of the technique of the 3 major shots of a baseline player - the forehand, the backhand and the serve. Then I will play “against” the student in rallies to give them experiential usage of the techniques previously discussed. I will adjust the student’s technique and, more importantly, movement as needed. In the 3rd lesson, we will focus on movement, particularly with non-adult students. We will aim to train the student to get their momentum into their ground strokes and then will begin a cursory lesson with approach shots and volleys. Young students often struggle with volleys so I will adjust the training routine as needed.

Youth players
Working with kidsI aim to make things less technique-oriented and more focused on movement and basic strategy. Lessons will include fun games with calm but intentional accuracy training!

Working with teenagersFor teenagers I typically anticipate they have played other sports, so I learn what techniques they’ve been taught. As a former mid-level soccer and low-level football and basketball player, I understand that footwork translates across sports and I would love to explain that to your teenage student. I train competitive strategy and spatial awareness to all students. And I like to give students a high-level practice partner for talented or high-achieving students.

What you need to bring- tennis racket befitting the student’s level - athletic (preferably tennis or basketball-sole) shoes - sunglasses, hat and/or visor as needed - water bottle or other hydration - preferably, transportation to the chosen location, can be negotiated if necessary - for kids/teenaged students, a way to contact parent or guardian if parent or guardian is not staying - other materials as students see fit (I.e. sweat towel, headband, hair tie, bag to place jewelry in) - self-growth mindset

What I can bring- adult (non-dotted) tennis balls - tennis hopper for ball pickup - sunscreen - my own Wilson rackets, which the student can demo as I see fit - an open mindset to the student’s level
