Dr. Christopher Hepburn, a distinguished musicologist and concert pianist, bridges classical traditions with contemporary wellness philosophies through his innovative approach to sound and musical expression. With a PhD from Texas Tech University focusing on sound embodiment across Western and East Asian traditions, Dr. Hepburn's scholarship culminated in his groundbreaking 2023 publication on premodern Japanese song poems. His academic appointments include prestigious fellowships at the University of Southern California, where he has contributed to interdisciplinary studies in history, art, and culture with his advisees taking first-prize at various creative symposia. His pianistic lineage traces directly to Beethoven and Chopin through the Leschetizky-Czerny and Horszowski-Mikuli pedagogical traditions, enriched by studies with renowned pedagogues Leslie Spotz, Lora Deahl, and Tatiana Roitmann. This classical foundation, combined with masterclasses from Christopher Elton (Royal Academy of Music), Jennifer Elowsky-Fox (Berklee College of Music), and Nicoletta Conti (student of Leonard Bernstein), informs his electrifying performances—once literally startling an audience member during a particularly dynamic interpretation of the first movement of Beethoven's Tempest Sonata. In 2018, he gained international recognition through his contribution to the pioneering complete works recording of Alexey Stanchinsky for Grand Piano Records distributed by Naxos. Dr. Hepburn's research on sound embodiment has earned acclaim at prestigious institutions worldwide, including Oxford University, Columbia University, and Waseda University (Japan). His scholarly work uniquely synthesizes historical performance practices with modern wellness concepts, creating a globally holistic approach to premodern and contemporary musical understanding and expression. As a member of the Leschetizky Association, Dr. Hepburn champions an adaptive teaching methodology that honors traditional technical excellence while embracing contemporary pedagogical innovations. His approach seamlessly integrates classical rigor with modern cultural fluency—reflected in his passion for anime, manga, and digital media—positioning him at the intersection of historical preservation and future-focused musical evolution.
"Wow! He really cares about the health and well being of his students, especially those who are still in school and have outside schedules. The lessons are so much fun, and I can really see my progress.

My lifelong love of music blossomed on the piano, an instrument whose versatility and expressive potential captivated me from a young age. As a concert pianist, I experienced the joy of performing firsthand and now, with 25 years of teaching behind me, I'm passionate about nurturing a love for music in others. I work with students of all ages and levels, helping them to not only master the technical skills of piano playing but also to discover the profound joy and fulfillment that music making brings.
I have a Bachelor's degree in Music and have put this experience to use playing in a church band and a local country band. I've taught piano (and voice) for several years now, and am happy to be working with Funkytown Music Academy.
A lifelong student of the piano, I've been sharing my passion for this versatile instrument for 50 years. My teaching method centers on fostering a love of music while providing a strong technical foundation, regardless of your current skill level. Let's explore the magic of music together – your piano journey begins today.

I am deeply passionate about music theory and composition, skills I largely taught myself from a young age. Since starting piano lessons at 7, my fascination with creating music has been unrelenting; melodies and chords seemed to flow effortlessly from my mind to my fingers. Over the years, I noticed the struggles many faced with music theory, contrasting sharply with my intuitive grasp. After years of introspection, I discovered my unique ability stemmed from a blend of natural aptitude and self-guided learning. Today, alongside designing recording studios, I find joy in teaching music theory and composition, especially to those eager to unlock their musical potential. It's a privilege to share my lifelong passion and nurture young talent who share my childhood enthusiasm for music.
"Without prior piano lessons, I spent months searching for a teacher who understood my desire to learn both playing and music theory. Our household piano sat unused for years and I always wanted to make it sound good. Most teachers focused only on playing and reading music, dismissing my interest in theory. YouTube helped, but it wasn't enough. Then I found Michael, who emphasizes theory over just playing. His approach made playing come naturally, which is exactly what I wanted that most teachers dismissed me on. Michael is not only a great teacher but also a friend. I highly recommend him for anyone wanting to go beyond just playing
