About your basketball coach

Hello, my name is Kira Lowery! I am a professional basketball player, looking to share my knowledge of the game and experiences to student-athletes of all ages and genders. My coaching style focuses on skill work with minimal conditioning, which will be beneficial for game-like situations. While working with student-athletes, my goal is to help build their confidence and teach them the importance of maintaining a consistent and efficient work ethic. Fun Facts About Me: At six years old, I played in my very first basketball game. I scored a basket, the crowd cheered loudly.. and I covered my ears and cried because it was so loud! Let's fast forward! I spent my first two years of college at a JUCO (Dyersburg State CC). During my time there, I received All Freshman Team, All Conference both years, and was named Offensive MVP and JUCO All American Third Team during my sophomore season. Afterwards, I played at two Division 1 programs, Auburn University and North Carolina Central University. At NCCU, I was named Team MVP my last two years of undergrad, whilst earning my Bachelor's degree in Psychology, Cum Laude. Once I graduated from NCCU, I went on to play overseas in Pozega, Croatia. I was blessed enough to be the starting point guard as a rookie, averaging 10.2 ppg, shooting 50% from the field. I look forward to meeting and assisting you all!

Beginner training plan
Your first lessonMy approach with a beginner involves me getting to know the player and vice versa. What is their goal, what do they want to work on, etc. To start, there will be ball handling drills, form shooting, basic defensive drills, and layup drills.
Lesson 11+The remaining lessons will include everything we learned from day one. Some drills will be shorter, others we will take more time on. The 3-4 basic routines will turn into one drill, more fast paced and detail-oriented. Each player is different, so my job is to be as precise and consistent with what we do.
Lesson 4-10At this point, I can imagine all players have made some level of development with the workout plan. As stated before, the goal will always stay the same, but what we do each day may look different and be quicker. For ball handling it will be less stationary and more movements, we will combine our ball handling and layups techniques into one drill, and we will spend more time on conditioning and shooting the basketball.
Lesson 2-3Around the second and third lesson, my workout plan truly depends on each player. Some may catch on quicker than others, which is okay! I envision keeping some of the basic drills from lesson one. If I see progress, the time we spend on the drills may reduce. The plan will stay the same, but the drills may look different.

Youth players
Working with kidsWith kids, my job will be to help them master the basic fundamentals early on. A lot of our drills may be repetitive early on, but it will be for a good cause.

Working with teenagersWith teenagers, my goal is to help them be precise, efficient, and well conditioned. Our drills will include a lot more skill work and shot making drills.

What you need to bringStudents can bring their own ball if that makes them more comfortable. I’m sure the YMCA will have a variety of basketballs though!

What I can bringI will bring cones for ball handling drills if that is what our lesson will entail and if the YMCA doesn’t provide any.
