Your first lessonThe first lesson is always an assessment to see what skills each player has and what it is that needs the most immediate attention.
Lesson 11+This is where players should be comfortable and confident knowing and displaying fundamentals at a core level.
Lesson 4-10Implementation of what we learned into more advanced drill work while explaining how and why each skill works.
Lesson 2-3Usually this is where basic fundamentals are taught and explained. This includes the proper way to dribble, execute moves, shooting form and defensive stance.
Youth players
Working with kids I adapt my basketball lessons to focus on fun, simplicity, and building a strong foundation. At this age, itās less about competition and more about developing basic skills like dribbling, passing, and shooting through creative, game-based drills. I use lots of visual demonstrations, keep instructions short and clear, and make sure every drill feels like a gameāwhether itās āRed Light, Green Lightā for dribbling or relay races for passing.
I also make sure to rotate activities quickly to match their attention span and ensure everyone feels involved and successful, regardless of skill level.
