About your piano coach

I grew up playing the piano, starting at 6 years old. I started playing the guitar and singing at 15 years old and this passion led me to get my B.A. in Music Performance from Florida Atlantic University. Since then I have played in multiple bands, written over 8 songs that are out on all major platforms and have taught hundreds of people how to play many different instruments! My teaching business is located in San Francisco, teaching piano, guitar, bass guitar, voice and drums.

Dan knows how to turn those "Oh no, I messed up again" moments into "Oops, I just composed a new masterpiece" moments. His positivity and encouragement are like a magic wand that turns every wrong note into a happy accident. He’s got the patience of a saint and the wit of a comedian, all wrapped up in a piano teacher package. He’s a serious musical maestro with not just piano, but vocals and the guitar as well. Dan is patient, knowledgeable, and always ready with a clever analogy to explain even the trickiest concepts. If you’re even considering piano lessons (or singing/guitar), Dan is your go-to guru. He’s the real deal – musical mentor, laughter-inducer, and all-around awesome human being. I’d give him 10/5 stars if I could!

I recently started learning music from scratch as an adult, and Dan has been my guide through this new journey. He began by asking about my goals and then structured our lessons to meet them. We've been focusing on fundamentals, and Dan mixes in a song from a movie to keep things engaging. I'm quite 'robotic' and I appreciate his patience and that he answers my questions in great detail. I've even tried to learn his ebb and flow, but I'm not quite there yet :P With a busy job, I've found Dan's flexibility with scheduling very accommodating. I would highly recommend Dan as your piano teacher.

So glad I came across Dan some years back for piano lessons! He has been teaching me (total beginner) for years as well as my teenage son who's quite advanced - and has helped us both make tremendous progress. Always with an encouraging and engaging approach to teaching which we've both really appreciated. He's now also building a new crew of high-quality teachers. We've worked with one of them recently and he was awesome. Dan also organizes occasional live get togethers (think intimate jam sessions) which have been really fun too. Highly recommended!

Dan is so much more than a piano teacher! He is a music mentor that will formulate his teaching optimally to help guide you to where you want to go. Dan and I connected a bit over a year ago when I first decided I would like to learn electronic music production. I had a background in guitar and singing, but very little to no competency with piano. Dan has made me competent at playing piano at a stage-level if I so should choose while also providing me the music theory-knowledge I needed to navigate the Ableton piano roll with ease. Can't say enough!

I recently started taking piano lessons with Dan Lupo and have been extremely impressed with his teaching style. As a complete beginner, I was nervous about starting to learn an instrument as an adult, but Dan was patient, encouraging, and made the experience enjoyable. He has taught me a few songs and even allowed me to perform live, which was a fantastic experience. I feel like I have learned a lot in just a few months and am excited to continue my journey with Dan as my teacher.

When I started my piano journey with Dan nearly four years ago, I was a complete beginner. The transformation since then has far exceeded what I thought possible for myself! Dan's expert guidance, tailored teaching methods, and infectious passion for music have not only shaped me into a confident pianist but also instilled in me a deep love for the instrument. I'm grateful to have him as my teacher, and would highly recommend him to anyone!

Beginner training plan
Your first lessonWe start all of our students off with a trial lesson to see if we connect! I get your goals and see your skill and then curate a curriculum based on getting you to your goals!
Lesson 2-3The 2-3 lessons are the building blocks of all others. After we have gotten your goals, these are the practical lessons of those goals.

What you need to bringI like to discuss this with each student, for piano there is no need to bring one. However, for guitar I do recommend the student bring their own.

What I can bringI can bring a guitar or a ukulele, however, I always encourage my students to buy their own as it will help them practice. By practicing, they will reach their goals so much faster!
