About Opie

I began playing golf after working at a summer camp in the late 90’s. I signed up to coach basketball, but the Bulls were in the Finals again, so by the time I got to camp, the only sport left to coach was golf, and I had zero playing or coaching experience in that sport. I had been an athlete all my life and a coach for almost a decade by that point, so I figured, “How hard can it be?” I found out quickly it was very hard, but also challenging in a way that kept me completely compelled to learn. I spent that summer learning the game from 10 year olds. We would drive over to the local course in rural Pennsylvania nearest the camp in the late afternoon, the sun getting low as we’re out there laughing and having a blast, usually at my expense. I vividly remember my mind being blown at the concept of hitting down, to make the ball go up. Fascinating! I got hooked, came home after camp, jumped into any and everything golf; Tiger Woods, Dave Pelz, Rick Smith, David Ledbetter, Golf Channel, etc., etc. I got pretty good quickly, played all over the place, signed up to attend a golf instructor school in 2002 and the rest is history. I’ve given thousands of lessons coast to coast, including Maui, Scottsdale, NYC, San Diego and even Tijuana. I have a deep knowledge of the game and swing mechanics, combined with a sincere passion to help anyone of any ability learn the game I have come to love so much. I’m looking forward to working with you soon! Thank you!

What students say...

"Coach Opie is an excellent golf coach! He really takes the time to work with you and is incredibly patient throughout the entire lesson. He explains things clearly and makes sure you understand each adjustment before moving on. His tips are practical, easy to apply, and made an immediate difference in my swing. I’ve already seen improvement in my consistency and confidence. Highly recommend him to anyone looking to improve their golf game!

About Jake

My journey in golf began at age five, competing in tournaments by age nine. I proudly represented Davis Senior High School's Varsity golf team for all four years. Although I didn't make the cut for the University of Oregon's D1 golf team, my passion for the sport remained undiminished. During high school, I shared my love for golf by coaching kids at the Golf and Splash summer camp in Davis. Now, I'm committed to regular practice, striving to lower my index back to scratch.

About Christian

Hi! My name is Christian Heisler-Cruz, or C for short. When I was about 4 years old, my dad put a club in my hand and took me to his favorite municipal course in my hometown of Topeka, Kansas to play a few holes. That day was the day I fell in love with this beautiful game. My dad was my first instructor and he always made sure I had fun more than anything else. That is an approach that I really appreciate and one I want to make sure I carry over with my role as an instructor. When we merge enjoyment and improvement, I believe that is when we can truly love it. Golf was and still is my favorite activity that I share with my dad, and I am hoping it is an activity I can enjoy with all my students as well! About Brandon

Willing to come to you! From North San Diego to Orange County. My coaching style is rooted in patience, personalization, and progress. I believe every golfer—whether brand new or returning to the game—deserves coaching that meets them where they are.. My approach focuses on simplifying the game as much as possible so that each swing, routine, and decision becomes repeatable under real on-course conditions. Golf doesn't have to be complicated to be effective—I aim to give students tools they can rely on, even when pressure builds. Ultimately, my goal is to help players build strong fundamentals, develop confidence, and enjoy the process of improvement. I work with students from beginners, intermediate or advanced. I also work with kids who want to give golf a try. Lesson Format: Each session is customized based on the student’s experience, goals, and learning style, with a consistent format that ensures structure and growth: 1. Initial Assessment & Goal Setting (First Lesson.) -Discuss student goals (e.g., break 100, improve short game, gain distance.) -Evaluate current swing, posture, grip, and stance. -Provide initial feedback and outline a personalized lesson plan 2. Warm-Up & Fundamentals Review (Each Lesson) -5–10 minutes of dynamic stretching and swing warm-up. -Brief review of previous lesson’s key takeaways 3. Drills & Skill Development -Use targeted drills to build consistency and technique (e.g., alignment sticks, impact bags, foot spray, and tees for feedback) -Focus on one major skill per session (e.g., ball striking, putting, bunker play). -Adjust drills in real-time based on performance and progress 4. Video Analysis (When Applicable) -Use mobile video tools for visual feedback. -Compare student’s swing to previous footage or pro examples 5. On-Course Situational Coaching (Available for Intermediate/Advanced) -Teach course management, club selection, and mental game strategies. -Practice real scenarios like uphill lies, tight fairways, or green reading 6. Recap & Homework -Recap top 2–3 focus points from the session -Provide practice drills or training plan to reinforce lessons between sessions -Offer encouragement and realistic next steps I also provide on-course lessons. . $75 for lessons + $50 for any additional hour, and I also kindly request to cover my green fees. For on course lessons, we will go over tee box strategy, pre shot routines, troubled lies, green reading and course management.

What students say...

"Brandon gave me a drill to help with shifting my weight and rotating my body through my swing for a better follow through. We also worked on refining my take away.

Why take golf lessons in San Diego?

San Diego's mild Pacific climate supports outdoor lessons close to 340 days a year, which removes the weather-driven cancellations that limit colder markets. Coastal humidity stays low, mornings stay cool through July, and winter rounds remain comfortable in the 60s. The active roster mixes coaches with tournament-tier backgrounds (one represented his country at high-level amateur events) and former competitive juniors, alongside specialists who focus on first-time learners and short-game work. Three concentration points anchor the scene: Balboa Park Golf Course in the center of the city, Mission Bay's short layout (popular for evening lessons after work), and The Loma Club in Point Loma for casual par-3 sessions. Pacific Beach and Tecolote Canyon round out the practical options, so most San Diego learners can find a coach within 15 minutes of home.

San Diego's most central public option, just east of downtown in Balboa Park. The 27-hole layout (18-hole regulation plus 9-hole executive) supports both beginner range work and full-course playing lessons, and multiple active coaches teach here regularly.

Mission Bay Golf Course – golf course in San Diego

An 18-hole executive course near the bay, popular for evening lessons after work thanks to its lighted driving range. The shorter layout and lack of forced carries make it a strong pick for first-time players who want to ease into on-course play.

The Loma Club – golf course in San Diego

The Loma Club

A nine-hole par-3 layout in Point Loma with a relaxed clubhouse vibe. Short, walkable rounds make it well suited for kids, couples learning together, and casual lesson formats where students want to apply range work on a real course quickly.

Tecolote Canyon Golf Course – golf course in San Diego

Tecolote Canyon Golf Course

An 18-hole executive course tucked into a canyon near Mission Bay. Tight fairways and natural terrain make it useful for short-game-focused coaching and approach-shot work, especially for mid-handicappers tightening their wedge play.

Admiral Baker Golf Course – golf course in San Diego

Located in Mission Valley with two 18-hole courses (North and South). The longer layouts work well for intermediate and advanced students focusing on full-swing distance control, course management, and on-course playing lessons with a competitive-tier coach.

What students say about golf lessons in San Diego

"Starting with Steven felt really solid. He's clearly got a good grasp of the basics, which I appreciated. Though I'd like to see more clarity on what the coming months will involve, especially drills I can do solo like the pillow drill. But honestly, I left feeling quite posit..."

"Outstanding Golf Instruction from Ricardo – Highly Recommended As someone who had never played golf before—aside from one round of mini golf over 20 years ago—I wasn't sure what to expect when I signed up for lessons. From the very first lesson, Ricardo exceeded all expectatio..."
Veronica
on Ricardo T.
"Ricardo's lesson was quite helpful, especially with the drill to stop early extension and keeping my right knee flexed, those tips really made a difference. We also went over my takeaway to reinforce better habits, which I appreciated. Still, I'm hopeful about checking how I p..."

Find a golf coach for your goal

  • Total beginners

If you've never picked up a club, San Diego's mild climate and short executive courses make it one of the easier US markets to start in. Coaches here regularly take first-time learners from grip-and-stance through their first nine holes within a small block of lessons.

What to look for: A coach with a high beginner-mentioned review count and a teaching home at Balboa Park or Mission Bay (lower stakes than full-length courses).

    Try Steven R.
  • Mid-handicappers tightening their game

Players breaking 100 or working toward breaking 90 benefit most from short-game and approach-shot work. San Diego's canyon and executive layouts (Tecolote, Mission Bay) are ideal practice grounds for wedge precision and course management.

What to look for: A coach with playing-lesson availability at Tecolote or Admiral Baker, plus reviews mentioning short-game work and on-course coaching rather than only range sessions.

    Try Peter J.
  • Competitive and tournament-focused players

For students working on tournament prep, single-digit handicap goals, or junior competitive paths, coaches with playing pedigrees and country-club teaching environments matter most. San Diego has multiple options at this level.

What to look for: Tournament-tier playing background (national-team or NCAA-level), comfort teaching at full-length venues like Admiral Baker, and reviews from advanced students rather than only beginners.
