"My name is David Fryer, and I am a singer-songwriter and working musician based in New York City. I recently took a lesson on vocal technique with Isaac Mann, and I can wholeheartedly recommend him as a teacher. I have been performing as a vocalist for 10 years and have some skill, yet I am largely self-taught. During the lesson I was able to experience the benefits of applying some theory and technique to my singing. In particular, I wanted to improve my ability to sing notes at the upper end of my range as a baritone without sounding strained and harsh. Through a number of exercises and concepts drawing from Isaac's extensive background as an opera and jazz singer, he was able to help me target the different parts of the body used in signing (stomach muscles, chest voice, head voice, and falsetto) and show how these things are interconnected. For example, I learned that practicing a melody with my falsetto can, in turn, aid me while singing the same melody with my chest voice. Isaac clearly lives and breathes music and has extensive theory and experience regarding the intricacies of the instrument of the human voice, yet his sense of humor and playfulness made for a highly enjoyable and stress-free lesson.
