About Cecil

With over four decades of experience as a Certified Tennis Professional, I'm dedicated to helping players of all levels enhance their skills and enjoyment of the game. Whether you're a beginner looking to grasp the fundamentals or an advanced player seeking to refine your technique, I'm here to guide you on your tennis journey. Teaching allows me to share the joy of movement with others. There’s something exhilarating about watching a player improve their skills and enjoy the physical activity. My teaching approach emphasizes biomechanically sound strokes, skill evaluation, and the often-overlooked fundamentals of teaching group lessons. Teaching Tennis allows me to make a positive impact on the lives of others. Whether it’s helping someone achieve their fitness goals, overcome challenges, or simply find joy in the game, knowing that I’ve played a part in their journey is immensely fulfilling.

What students say...

"I'm glad to say my recent lesson with Cecil helped me improve my forehand consistency, especially on those wide balls, even though staying low still feels a bit tricky. Though I feel more confident overall, I think I need to focus on faster recovery after hits. Still, it's encouraging to see progress in court coverage and footwork, so I might try to keep building on these areas. If you're looking to sharpen your baseline game, Cecil's approach might be worth trying.

About Jimmy

I picked up tennis as a middle schooler, played as a high schooler and enjoyed it competitively into both college (recreational) and during active duty. I continue to play, learn and tutor my children. I also had the honor of coaching elementary and middle school children as a Senior in high school. My desire to coach is in inspiring the next generation in this wonderful sport. Elaborating; my more competitive years were from 1994-1997 where I would compete across the state of Oklahoma in numerous USTA tournaments. Additionally, our high school hosted and participated in weekly matches and tournaments during the fall and spring school semesters. On a personal level, I am a Christian, husband, father, and hobbies are numerous because I’m an adventurous guy (tennis, golf, fishing, snorkeling, scuba diving, mountain and trail hiking, Astronomy). Professionally, I completed my Master’s Degree in 2016 & recently my PMP Certification (Project Management Professional). Security+ (CE) certified. Additionally, I coached Jr. Flag football (6 seasons), Jr. Volleyball (1 season) & Little League Baseball (2 seasons). My MinistrySafe Background Church sponsored by First Baptist Church of Georgetown (TX) was renewed as of July 2025 which included specific training in Sexual Assault Prevention and Reporting. TMT has a copy of the previous background annual check. During the week of 21-25 July 2025, I volunteered and served as the Small Group Leader for one of the 4th & 5th grades boys and girls (16 children; 2 supporting volunteers). 2025 RECAP: 30 Different Students 173 Lessons of Varying Player Levels Age Groups included: -Young children -Teenagers -Adults

Brian Smithart profile
About Brian

Brian, an accomplished adult player, has won a Texas sectional Men’s Open level major zone tournament and achieved a 6.0 NTRP rating. He is also a former Texas sectional major zone tournament champion at the 5.0 level and was USPTA certified to teach tennis 1999. Among his many achievements, his favorite memory is playing father-son doubles. As a coach, Brian has guided thousands of students, earning recognition from the City of Austin Parks and Recreation Department for his work with junior players. Many of his former students have reached the super champ level, with one winning an NCAA D3 national championship in 2019.

What students say...

"Generally, I find Brian has a good structure on the court, and he can rally with me for more energy and engagement which keeps things pretty active. Still, I’d like to see us progress towards a full shot regimen during rallies, though. If that improves, I think it’ll help me quite a bit moving forward. Definitely worth trying out if you want a coach who can keep the structure going without losing focus.

About Brian

College tennis player and current 5.0 ranked coach, dedicated to teaching tennis and pickleball as a lifelong sport! Excited to get started with you and take your game to the next level!

What students say...

"This was a private lesson for me and my girlfriend. We’ve been wanting to learn the basics and fundamentals and I saw the teachme app ad somewhere. After going through different coaches and reviews I stumbled on Patrick. I’m glad we choose Patrick because he was exactly was his reviews said. My and my girlfriend were nervous at first and also having to be instructed in front of a bunch of other golfers felt nerve racking, but Patrick made it super easy. Super patient. He provided clubs and the steps he took with the explanation through every movement was great. He started by explaining to my girlfriend how golf is played and the terminologies. We booked 3 sessions with him and can’t wait for the next.

With 6 years of playing tennis and and an extensive playing background, I offer comprehensive tennis instruction. My passion lies in helping students unlock their full potential on the court. I'm dedicated to fostering both skill development and a love for the game.

What students say...

"I felt the lesson covered a good balance of fundamentals and I even got to start on a new shot, though I think repeating that work could be helpful. Santiago's approach is quite straightforward, so if you're looking to build on what you already know, add somethingnew to the repertoire, or reset, it's worth giving him a try.

Work with student to understand their areas of weakness and areas they want to focus on improving. Will also use this lesson to further evaluate or assess competence in basics. Development of a future lesson plan will follow future lessons. I asses all players as a whole person. I will need the player to approach this initial lesson with humility and vulnerability. This implies have been very open conversation to identify areas outside of the game that are either helping the player or hurting the player in terms of their performance and desire.

What do coaches say I need to bring to my lesson?

C

Coach Cecil

tennis coach

Here's a list of essential equipment for your new tennis students: Essential Items: * Tennis Racquet: If you don't have one, I can lend you one. I can also recommend a beginner-friendly racquet from a local sports store or online retailer. * Tennis Shoes: These should have good traction and support for lateral movement. * Comfortable Athletic Clothing: Shorts, skirts, t-shirts, or tank tops that allow for easy movement. * Water Bottle: Staying hydrated is crucial, especially during physical activity. Optional Items: * Tennis Balls: While I will provide balls during the lesson, having your own can be convenient for practice. * Visor or Hat: To protect your eyes from the sun. * Sunglasses: For added eye protection. * Wristband or Towel: To wipe sweat. Important Note: * Racquet Size: For beginners, it's often recommended to start with a larger head size racquet, as it provides a larger sweet spot, making it easier to hit the ball cleanly. By having these items, you can focus on learning and enjoying the game without any distractions.

Personal racket(s), hydration, appropriate clothing (for the weather), any personal medical equipment (inhalers, braces, pills, etc), sunscreen, sunglasses, sweat towels for hand & forehead), light snacks, moleskin (for hotspots on feet). Journals are encouraged (to include pen/pencil) unless students use a digital device to make notes. If students desire to record portions of their session, they can bring devices to do so. Students need to understand their learning style and bring additional items that facilitate learning. Umbrellas are encouraged to aid in cooling the body and minimizing the possibility of dehydration and heat exhaustion.

What do coaches say about teaching kids and youth?

J

Coach Jimmy

tennis coach

My lesson plan is the same for all ages, but I adjust based on where the student is at in their development. If a student is just starting out, I will scale back significantly. Coaching a younger student is only as successful as the parents’ participation to helping the student understand more and more outside of lessons.

When I’m working with kids — even if I’m teaching the same core tennis skills — my approach, pacing, and communication shift a lot from how I’d coach adults. The key is to keep it simple, keep it moving, and keep it fun while still reinforcing proper technique. Here’s how I adapt: 1. Adjust the Environment • Court Size: Use smaller courts (red, orange, or green ball court dimensions) so kids rally sooner and feel successful faster. • Equipment: • Lighter racquets suited to their height and strength. • Low-compression balls (red, orange, green) to slow the game and lower bounce height. • Targets & Visual Aids: Cones, flat markers, hula hoops for aiming — kids respond better to visual goals than verbal ones. 2. Simplify Communication • Short Instructions: 1–2 key points max per drill (e.g., “Turn your shoulders” or “Hit in front”). • Demonstrate More, Talk Less: Kids copy movement better than they process long explanations. • Positive Framing: Replace “Don’t drop your racquet head” with “Keep your racquet up high like a superhero sword.” 3. Build Engagement & Fun • Game-Like Drills: Wrap technique into challenges — e.g., “Hit the cone” or “Can we get 5 in a row?” • Mini-Competitions: Races, accuracy games, and team challenges keep energy high. • Role Play: Give creative themes (“Pretend you’re a ninja when you split step” or “Hit the ball over the mountain”). 4. Keep Lessons Dynamic • Short Segments: Rotate activities every 5–8 minutes to match their attention span. • Movement First: Avoid long lines — have multiple stations or feed quickly so kids are always active. • Progressive Challenges: Start easy, then add small challenges (smaller target, faster ball). 5. Focus on Development Beyond Technique • Coordination & Agility: Include off-court activities like ladder drills, catching games, and reaction ball bounces. • Sportsmanship & Confidence: Praise effort, not just results — encourage high-fives, “good shot” habits. • Self-Discovery: Ask guiding questions — “What happens when you hit earlier?” — so they learn to problem-solve. 6. Manage Energy & Behavior • Set Clear Expectations: Start each lesson with 2–3 simple rules (e.g., “Listen, try your best, have fun”). • Reward Good Habits: Stickers, stamps, or “Player of the Day” keep kids motivated. • Read the Room: If attention drops, switch to a quick game before returning to technique.
