Bill Barrett profile
About Bill

My name is Bill Barrett and I consider myself to be one of the luckiest people in the world! I have been playing golf since I was 5 years old. I had very successful amateur and collegiate careers before declaring professional status in 1981. I have enjoyed playing and teaching the game for over 47 years. My father, Boyd Barrett, taught golf for 50 years. My sister, Sharon Barrett, played on the LPGA Tour for 18 years and was a winner on the Tour. Following her retirement from the LPGA tour, Sharon taught golf for 13 years. I have been teaching golf for over 31 years. This gives me a firm understanding of what works and doesn’t work for my clients. Golf technology may change over the years; however, the basic fundamentals are key. Two components in a lesson is to keep it simple and make sure the person is having fun. I don’t know too many golf families that have more than 100 years of experience playing and teaching the game. I welcome an opportunity to make you a better player.

Why take golf lessons in San Diego?

San Diego's mild Pacific climate supports outdoor lessons close to 340 days a year, which removes the weather-driven cancellations that limit colder markets. Coastal humidity stays low, mornings stay cool through July, and winter rounds remain comfortable in the 60s. The active roster mixes coaches with tournament-tier backgrounds (one represented his country at high-level amateur events) and former competitive juniors, alongside specialists who focus on first-time learners and short-game work. Three concentration points anchor the scene: Balboa Park Golf Course in the center of the city, Mission Bay's short layout (popular for evening lessons after work), and The Loma Club in Point Loma for casual par-3 sessions. Pacific Beach and Tecolote Canyon round out the practical options, so most San Diego learners can find a coach within 15 minutes of home.

Popular golf courses

Balboa Park Golf Course – golf course in San Diego

Balboa Park Golf Course

San Diego's most central public option, just east of downtown in Balboa Park. The 27-hole layout (18-hole regulation plus 9-hole executive) supports both beginner range work and full-course playing lessons, and multiple active coaches teach here regularly.

Mission Bay Golf Course – golf course in San Diego

Mission Bay Golf Course

An 18-hole executive course near the bay, popular for evening lessons after work thanks to its lighted driving range. The shorter layout and lack of forced carries make it a strong pick for first-time players who want to ease into on-course play.

The Loma Club – golf course in San Diego

The Loma Club

A nine-hole par-3 layout in Point Loma with a relaxed clubhouse vibe. Short, walkable rounds make it well suited for kids, couples learning together, and casual lesson formats where students want to apply range work on a real course quickly.

Tecolote Canyon Golf Course – golf course in San Diego

Tecolote Canyon Golf Course

An 18-hole executive course tucked into a canyon near Mission Bay. Tight fairways and natural terrain make it useful for short-game-focused coaching and approach-shot work, especially for mid-handicappers tightening their wedge play.

Admiral Baker Golf Course – golf course in San Diego

Admiral Baker Golf Course

Located in Mission Valley with two 18-hole courses (North and South). The longer layouts work well for intermediate and advanced students focusing on full-swing distance control, course management, and on-course playing lessons with a competitive-tier coach.

What students say about golf lessons in San Diego

Find a golf coach for your goal

  • Total beginners

If you've never picked up a club, San Diego's mild climate and short executive courses make it one of the easier US markets to start in. Coaches here regularly take first-time learners from grip-and-stance through their first nine holes within a small block of lessons.

What to look for: A coach with a high beginner-mentioned review count and a teaching home at Balboa Park or Mission Bay (lower stakes than full-length courses).

    Try Steven R.
  • Mid-handicappers tightening their game

Players breaking 100 or working toward breaking 90 benefit most from short-game and approach-shot work. San Diego's canyon and executive layouts (Tecolote, Mission Bay) are ideal practice grounds for wedge precision and course management.

What to look for: A coach with playing-lesson availability at Tecolote or Admiral Baker, plus reviews mentioning short-game work and on-course coaching rather than only range sessions.

    Try Peter J.
  • Competitive and tournament-focused players

For students working on tournament prep, single-digit handicap goals, or junior competitive paths, coaches with playing pedigrees and country-club teaching environments matter most. San Diego has multiple options at this level.

What to look for: Tournament-tier playing background (national-team or NCAA-level), comfort teaching at full-length venues like Admiral Baker, and reviews from advanced students rather than only beginners.

    Try Ricardo T.
